PostDoc Positions (f/m)

The Alexander von Humboldt Sofja Kovalevskaja Group headed by Dr. Mazhar Ali is looking for Postdoctoral Researchers in the field of 2D material physics/chemistry. The project is an interdisciplinary investigation into the fundamental transport characteristics of novel 2D spin-liquid-candidate materials and topological materials. The researcher will focus on the exfoliation, thin film fabrication, or focused-ion-beam milling of materials to investigate their transport properties in the 2D limit. Particular emphasis lies on exfoliation of layered, van-der-waals materials like Graphene, WTe2, CrI3, Nb3Cl8, and others. Fundamental electronic properties of the pure materials as well as heterostructures of the materials with magnetic or strain-inducing layers will be investigated. Also, josephson-junction and qbit fabrication will be carried out and superconducting properties explored.

Candidates should have

  • completed their PhD degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, or related fields
  • a strong research and journal publication record as well as an excellent academic record
  • excellent English language skills
  • research experience with thin flake exfoliation and device fabrication (E-beam lithography), thin film deposition, spintronic materials and devices, magnetic and transport characterization
  • a strong drive to excel in an interdisciplinary and international environment
  • highly creative and innovative competencies and must be outstanding team players who can work in a fast-paced and highly dynamic environment

  • positions are with an initial appointment for one year with possibility of extension
  • positions are available immediately
  • we welcome applications from disabled persons with equal qualifications
  • furthermore, the Max Planck Society aims to employ more women in this area and therefore particularly encourages applications from women

  • can be uploaded as a single pdf file at our application website with reference to MPI_Halle_PD_003. Please supply the name and email of at least two references
  • should include a complete CV, certificates and transcripts, a statement of past research accomplishments (PhD thesis, research projects)
  • Also email Dr. Mazhar Ali at with a notification of application

Only online applications will be considered. More detailed information about our research areas
