Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship for Junting Wang

August 26, 2025

SMFD researcher Junting Wang, Ph.D., has been awarded the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship. The fellowship will allow her to advance her research on open-shell nanographenes (NGs) even further. Congratulations!

Here’s a short interview with the awardee.

How did you feel when you received the news about the award?

I am deeply honored to have been awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. I firmly believe that this fellowship will provide me with the theoretical knowledge and experimental expertise required to grow into an independent academic researcher. I am also sincerely grateful to Professor Feng for his continued encouragement and for providing an exceptional platform that has made this opportunity possible.

Would you like to share your research plans with us?

Open-shell nanographenes (NGs) are predicted to exhibit diverse magnetic properties, offering great potential for applications in spintronics and quantum computing. However, controlling spin order remains an elusive yet highly desirable goal, particularly in NGs containing multiradicals. With the support of  the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, my research will focus on precisely controlling through-space spin-spin coupling to realize NG radicals with high-spin ground states. This approach aims to uncover the fundamental rules governing spin-spin interactions and to provide deeper insights into the underlying magnetic mechanisms. Ultimately, this willpave the way for the rational design of next-generation magnetic materials and new advances in molecular magnetism.

Which aspects of German culture would you like to explore?

I look forward to engaging with German scientific communities and cultural life. Collaborating with leading research groups will not only accelerate my research. It will also deepen my understanding of German culture, education, and technological innovation, while broadening my perspective and enriching both my approach to research and my outlook on life.

About Jungting Wang

Junting Wang is a Chinese native who got her start in science at Nankai University in Tianjin, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. She moved on to the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry to pursue her Master in Applied Chemistry. Her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry was awarded by the University of Hong Kong. On October 1, 2025, Junting Wang will join the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics as AvH Fellow.

About the Humboldt Research Fellowship

The Humboldt Research Fellowship is sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and supports researchers with above-average qualifications from around the world. Fellows benefit from individual support and a diverse sponsorship portfolio. AvH approves about 20 to 25 percent of applications. For more details, please visit www.humboldt-foundation.de/en/apply.
