What the heck is Tenure-Track?

In the German academic system, Tenure-Track is a relatively new concept. With a tenure-track position, one gets the opportunity to an immediately transition to a permanent position when successfully completing the probationary period (known as the tenure-track phase). The majority of tenure-track positions come along with a professorship; less common and known are lecturer or researcher positions with tenure-track. [more]

Frequency multiplication by collective nanoscale spin-wave dynamics

Lecture & Talk
In the scientific field of magnetism, attention is moving towards ever more complicated magnetic textures. Simple ferromagnetic materials, however, seem to have nothing interesting to offer anymore. Or, do they? [more]
The Research School Network Halle invites all IMPRS-members to a summer meeting. Participants from local Research schools in Natural Sciences will have the opportunity to get into contact in a stimulating atmosphere, which fosters exchange and creates opportunities for collaboration. [more]

What is a Patent attorney, how do you become one and what (the heck) does a patent attorney do all day? Short answer: fighting with paper, BUT there is more to it. [more]
The Research School Network Halle invites all participating doctoral researchers to the third summer meeting. Doctoral researchers from research schools in the field of Natural Sciences and Agricultural and Food Economics have the opportunity to get into contact in a stimulating atmosphere, which fosters exchange and creates opportunities for collaborations. The meeting starts with an interactive workshop on science communication and ends with a get-together. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided for free, alcoholic beverages will be available for a small fee. PIs and postdocs are welcome! [more]

IMPRS Kick-Off

During the first IMPRS meeting of the second funding period, current and prospective members of the research school will present their projects in a poster presentation. Moreover, the event will be an excellent opportunity for networking and inspiring new joint projects. [more]

How we can model and use symmetry

Scientific Module
After some motivation and first examples, we look at groups systematically and explore the mathematical language to study them. There will be exercises to work on and we discuss solutions (even if incomplete). One of the goals is to understand the symmetry of regular n-gons and to really get in touch with mathematical reasoning. And of course we want to discuss where symmetry might play a role in your work! [more]
Displaying a poster at an academic conference is an important and effective way for junior researchers to present their work in progress to the international scientific community. As such, the poster presentation is not only a good alternative to a classic conference talk, but also offers an almost ideal opportunity to network with colleagues working in a similar field. Yet, many posters are inadequately written and/or designed and fail to attract visitors, and poster presenters, thus, often miss their chance to connect with their fellow researchers when discussing their posters. [more]
As a premiere, we cordially invite the PhD students of Fraunhofer IMWS and MPI of Microstructure Physics to a get together. We want to create an opportunity to identify common research topics, strengthen the professional exchange and crossover networking between the PhD students of the institutes and last but not least provide an opportunity to share common challenges and experiences during the dissertation phase. We would be pleased if as many PhD students from both institutes as possible would take advantage of this opportunity. Please register by October 1, 2023. It is also possible to join the event after 5 pm, but in this case registration is also necessary because we will serve pizza and drinks. We look forward to meeting and exchanging ideas with you! IMPRS Retreat 2023

The IMPRS-STNS students meet from 25-28 October for their annual retreat at the LEUCOREA in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The program is organized by the IMPRS student committee. [more]
Careers in academia are often challenging, because only a minority of people gets a permanent position. In this workshop we first talk about how to make it for a permanent position in academia. After that you will learn how to find career paths outside of academia. The workshop is focussed on the German labour market, but includes some aspects of careers in Austria, Switzerland, UK and US. Furthermore, strategies for the non-academic market can be used in many countries. [more]
Scientists make some mistakes as soon as they start to apply outside of academia. This workshop will help you to write a convincing application. [more]

The IMPRS board meeting is scheduled for February 8 from 14:00 to 16:00, exclusively for board members, to be held at the immersive lab (B.2.C07). Following the meeting, we invite our PhD students, recent graduates, and IMPRS board members to a get-together starting at 16:00 in the lounge (Building B), providing the opportunity to network, share experiences, and discuss future training opportunities.
