Job Code: MPI-Halle-Postdoc NINT

Job Offer from September 10, 2019

Postdoctoral Fellows

The Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, Halle, Germany, Department of Nanophotonics, Integration, and Neural Technology (NINT), Director Prof. Joyce Poon, is recruiting Postdoctoral Fellows. Our new Department is initiating research programs on devices and microsystems for future computing and brain activity mapping technologies. We are launching research projects in the following areas:

  • Nanotechnology-enabled brain implants, especially those that combine multiple sensing/stimulation modalities in a single package, to advance neuroscience and brain-computer interfaces
  • Photonic integrated circuits in the visible spectrum for applications beyond telecommunications, such as imaging, displays, sensing, and computing
  • Integration of phase-change materials onto silicon photonic circuits for sensitive photodetection and highly tunable optical thin-film surfaces

Your tasks

  • Collaborate with the team to complete projects in integrated photonics and neurotechnologies
  • Your research may include:
    • Design, nanofabrication, and measurement photonic and other microtechnology devices (e.g., microfluidics, microelectronics)
    • Culturing and 3D printing neural tissues and organoids
    • Design, fabrication, and characterization (in vitro and in vivo) of brain implants
  • Assist in establishing the photonics, prototyping, and neurotechnology labs in the Department
  • Train and work closely with other postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. and/or Master’s students
  • Present research results in international scientific journals and conferences
  • Interact with private sector partners if necessary

 Your profile

  • You have earned or will soon earn a Ph.D. Degree in engineering (electrical, computer, bioengineering), applied physics, or a related discipline
  • You are motivated by grand challenges
  • You have a demonstrated track-record of scientific productivity
  • You excel at independently defining problems and solving them with creativity and resourcefulness
  • You are a fast learner and excited to learn about other disciplines
