Prof. Stuart Parkin appointed as IAS Distinguished Fellow at Nanyang Technological University

Prof. Stuart Parkin has been appointed a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore.

The Institute of Advanced Studies at the NTU was established in July 2005 with the mission to provide an interactive catalytic platform for eminent scientists and scholars in the pursuit of enduring knowledge. The director of the Institute, Prof. Tze-Chien Sum, formally appointed Stuart Parkin to this honorary Fellowship on January 20th, 2022.

Parkin, Director of the Nano Systems from Ions, Spins and Electrons Department at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, is a pioneer in the field of spintronics. He maintains a long-standing relationship with Singapore. In 2007, he was appointed a Distinguished Visiting Professor, National University of Singapore and in 2010 a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Data Storage Institute, Singapore. Since 2014, he has been a Member of the International Evaluation Panel (IEP) for the Competitive Research Programme (CRP) of the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore, which funds large-scale strategic initiatives and builds up research and development capabilities by nurturing research talent.

The appointment of Parkin as an IAS Distinguished Fellow took place in parallel with the 10th Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS), which was held on January 17-21, 2022 in Singapore. Parkin was one of the distinguished speakers at the GYSS, each of whom was a recipient of one of a Nobel Prize, a Fields Medal, a Millennium Technology Prize or a Turing Award. Parkin is the 2014 Millennium Technology Prize laureate. Each year, the GYSS brings together bright young researchers and top scientific minds from around the world to discuss science and technology trends, future game changers and how research could address major global challenges. This year more than 1500 students participated in the GYSS.
