The Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, Halle, Germany is inviting applications for an independent

Max Planck Research Group Leader

in the area of silicon integrated photonics for innovative applications in the visible spectrum. The position will be in the new NINT Department. The Department is initiating research programs on devices and microsystems for the future of computing. Photonics, electronics, and neural tissue culture labs are being constructed. The appointment can commence as early as June 2019.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, applied physics, or a related discipline with a few years of postdoctoral experience. The working language at the Institute is English. Research excellence of the applicants will be evaluated primarily by publications in leading journals and conferences in the field, awards and accolades, and references. Other evidence of impact, such as intellectual property and patents, will also be considered.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent and innovative research program on devices and systems that fully leverages the silicon photonics foundry partnerships, custom wafer runs for visible-light photonics, and the resources and facilities in the NINT Department. Thus, a demonstrated track-record in foundry silicon photonics (e.g., simulation and design, layout, characterization, managing wafer runs), photonic techniques for neuroscience, and experience with in vitro and/or in vivo neurobiology experiments are highly desirable assets. The Max Planck Research Group Leader will be offered a research budget and have the opportunity to supervise postdoctoral fellows and students.

The successful candidate will be appointed for five years. Depending on the progress of the work and taking into account the financial possibilities and those under labour legislation, the Max Planck Research Group can be extended twice at maximum by two years in each case on an individual basis according to scientific criteria and after a positive evaluation in each case. Remuneration will be paid on the basis of remuneration group W2 of the Federal Civil Service Remuneration Act (Bundesbesoldungsgesetz).

To apply, please submit your CV, publication list, a summary of your research accomplishments (2 pages max) and description of your research plans (3 pages max) as a single pdf file to referencing MPI-Halle-W2 before March 15, 2019. Please arrange for at least 2 letters of references to be directly sent by the referees to before the deadline. Applications without reference letters will not be considered. Short-listed candidates will be invited for interviews at the Institute.

The Max Planck Gesellschaft wishes to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented. Women are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply.
