The Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, Halle, Germany, NINT Department, Director Prof. Joyce Poon, is recruiting Postdoctoral Fellows. The NINT Department is initiating research programs on devices and microsystems for the future of computing. We have research in the following areas:

  • Photonic integrated circuits in the visible spectrum for imaging, displays, and sensing
  • Nanotechnology-enabled brain implants to advance neuroscience and brain-computer interfaces
  • Integration of phase-change materials onto silicon photonic circuits for neuromorphic computing
  • Artificial neural tissues

English is the working language at the Institute.

Your Tasks

  • Collaborate with the team to complete projects in integrated photonics and neurotechnologies
  • Your research may include:
    • Design, nanofabrication, and measurement photonic and other microtechnology devices (e.g., microfluidics, microelectronics)
    • Modelling, culturing, and 3D printing neural tissues and organoids
    • Design, fabrication, and characterization (in vitro and in vivo) of brain implants
  • Assist in establishing the photonics, prototyping, and neurotechnology labs in the Department
  • Train and work closely with other postdoctoral fellows, students, and staff
  • Present research results in international scientific journals and conferences
  • Interact with private sector partners if necessary

Your Profile

  • You have earned or will soon earn a Ph.D. Degree in engineering (electrical, computer, bioengineering), applied physics, or a related discipline
  • You are motivated by grand challenges
  • You have a demonstrated track-record of scientific productivity
  • You excel at independently defining problems and solving them with creativity and resourcefulness
  • You are a fast learner and excited to learn about other disciplines
  • You are an effective team player that excels in a fast-paced, highly dynamic, interdisciplinary and international environment
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills in English
